After searching for a location that offered the perfect lifestyle and a great place to raise their kids, Graeme and Ann Shaw moved to Murrumbateman in 1985. In 1998, the Shaw family decided to purchase a 700 acre property.
A year later, they planted 85 acres of grape vines, and became a grape-grower for Australia’s then-largest wine company. In the years that followed, Shaw Vineyard Estate began producing its own range of premium cool climate wines, winning an array of national and international awards for excellence.
The family business now employs their son, daughter and son-in-law, and a number of local staff. Graeme says their number one preference is to stay local, and use local suppliers wherever possible.
Shaw Vineyard Estate is a half hour drive to Canberra, and enjoys easy access to the vibrant Canberra restaurant scene. Graeme says that the Canberra region is gaining a worldwide reputation for quality grapes, with Canberra region wines now found throughout Canberra and Sydney. The business also exports wines to China, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.
Of living in the Yass Valley, Graeme says that they love being able to use Canberra’s facilities, while living in the country. “Canberra is a half hour drive. We can get to the snow or beach within an hour and a half. And, we’re in a great country area for a great country lifestyle!”
