Harvest Café is a café by day, restaurant by night, located on the main street in Goulburn. Since opening in April 2017, it has experienced remarkable growth, attracting locals, travellers and tourists visiting the town.
The café is owned and run by chef Janine Heat. Janine grew up in Goulburn and did her Chef apprenticeship in town, before leaving to work in some of the region’s best restaurants. After 15 years, and keen to bring all she had learned back to her home town, Janine returned to Goulburn and established the Harvest Café.
Within months of opening, the café won the 2017 Goulburn Chamber of Commerce Business Award for Sustainability, for their use of sustainable business practices, such as the “Keep Cups in Town” initiative. The café and catering menu is centred around fresh regional produce, current food trends, and unique products offered by suppliers in the region.
Janine says that these and other niche areas were lacking in Goulburn, and she wanted to make them available through the café. “Goulburn is a booming town. It has massive potential being the travel location to Sydney, Canberra, the South Coast, Bathurst, and the snow.” She says there are many new businesses that could set up in Goulburn, providing services to the community that are currently limited or non-existent.
Harvest café employs people from the local region, including a few who worked with Janine previously and decided to join her at the café. She says moving back to town is one of the best decisions she’s made for her career, and is grateful for the community support she’s received.
